Sadly this is true. If you give up a council property, then you are deemed not to require one and you won't be put on any other lists. It would be foolish to give it up and one way around the problem would be to offer your flat as a mutual exchange and 'swap' it with a similar one in the area you need. Most local authorities have lists of folks wanting to exchange as do housing associations. There are lots of mutual exchange sites on the internet also, so try this before you give it up completely!
